New partnership: ESR, the Zanzibar Fisheries and Marine Resources Research Institute (ZAFIRI) and the Zanzibari Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries

We’re using our expertise to impact policy and make a real difference in the lives of millions of fish and people! We’re working with the Zanzibar Fisheries and Marine Resources Research Institute (ZAFIRI) and the Zanzibari Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries to develop a strategy for sustainable and ethical aquaculture in Zanzibar.

This includes:

  • Providing a common vision and strategic direction for developing the aquaculture sector, in line with blue economy principles and objectives,
  • Addressing key challenges and opportunities, such as market access, climate change, environmental sustainability, social inclusion, and innovation,
  • Promoting best practices and standards for animal welfare, environmental protection, and social responsibility,
  • Enhancing resilience and adaptation to climate change and other risks,
  • Supporting innovation, research, and development for aquaculture technologies and products,
  • Improving access to quality inputs, infrastructure, markets, and finance for aquaculture operators,
  • Diversifying and adding value to aquaculture products and services,
  • Strengthening monitoring, control and surveillance systems,
  • Empowering women, youth, and vulnerable groups in aquaculture value chains,
  • Create decent employment opportunities, and
  • Enhance capacity building, extension, and education for aquaculture stakeholders.

To complete this mandate, we’ll be conducting a situational analysis of the aquaculture sector in Zanzibar, exploring relevant issues and strategies, and helping to strengthen legal and institutional frameworks. We’ll also develop a monitoring and evaluation system to track the progress and measure the impact. We’re excited to support the creation of programmes to engage youth and disadvantaged groups in Zanzibar’s aquaculture value chain.
