Who We Are
Our journey to promote aquatic animal welfare started in 2021, and has been made possible through the generous support of impactful organisations and individuals who believe in our mission.
our mission
Our mission is to improve animal welfare in the aquatic foods sector by developing practical, science-based solutions that drive institutional change, while promoting leadership in the fair treatment of the most overlooked aquatic species in the global food system, with a special focus on Africa.
our vision
We are working towards a world with a resilient and compassionate aquatic food system, free of intensive and unethical practices.
our values
We are guided by:
- Integrity, in standing up for animal welfare even when it’s difficult
- Collaboration, by working across sectors and cultures to build lasting change
- Transparency, through honest communication and open sharing of knowledge
- Excellence, by striving for the highest quality in our science, solutions, and partnerships
DEVISING SUSTAINABLE WIN-WIN SOLUTIONS
Our strategy involves devising sustainable solutions with widespread benefits for animals, the environment and humans. Improving conditions for farmed aquatic animals can boost their health, reducing reliance on the use of antimicrobials and minimising mortalities.
This approach, synonymous with “One Health” and “One Welfare” in animal husbandry, should be applied universally across our food systems to promote a holistic approach to sustainability. The same holds true for wild-caught aquatic animals, where gentle methods and immediate processing, as practised in some Japanese vessels, ensure minimal suffering and align with principles of ethical treatment and resource conservation.
