Vegesent x ESR: strengthening fish welfare through sustainable creativity

We’re pleased to announce a new collaboration with Vegesent, an artist-led platform promoting environmentally responsible creativity. This partnership highlights an often-overlooked issue: how everyday art materials can affect aquatic ecosystems, including the welfare of farmed and wild fish.

Across sectors, decisions made far from the water can influence the health of marine and freshwater environments. Certain pigments, resins, plastics, and solvents contain compounds that persist in waterways, entering ecosystems through wastewater or landfill runoff.

While the contribution of art materials is small compared with industrial sources, the cumulative effect of microplastics, chemical residues, and heavy metals remains a concern. Addressing these impacts aligns with our wider work on supporting fish welfare and promoting responsible, evidence-based practice across seafood supply chains.

From 3 December to 20 December, Vegesent will support Ethical Seafood Research by:

• Donating 3€ for every click on her existing email list (up to 300€)

• Donating 5€ for every new subscriber

This is where you come in.

You don’t pay anything — your engagement alone leads to a donation if you subscribe. Vegesent’s support will directly contribute to our work on improving fish welfare and advancing transparent, welfare-focused research.

In addition, Vegesent offers subscribers a curated list of eco-friendly art materials, including alternatives that minimise harmful residues, reduce plastic use, and prioritise safer production processes.

This initiative demonstrates how diverse communities can help safeguard aquatic environments. Creative sectors, educators, hobbyists, and students all play a role in shaping demand for safer, more sustainable materials. Partnerships like this one help broaden public understanding of the connections between environmental quality and animal welfare.

We encourage you to visit Vegesent, and subscribe to receive the eco-friendly materials resource and give a 5€ donation to our cause: https://vegesent.com/inspiration/protect-fish.

Your support will help us fund a next generation of 30 Fish Welfare Agents in Kenya, supporting over 1,000 small fish farmers and millions of fish.
